From a hit manga series in 1996, Yu-Gi-Oh! has become a successful franchise that eventually expanded to various media. It was adopted into an equally successful anime series in 1998 and is followed by multiple sequels and spin-offs. The premise of the series mainly focuses on a fictional trading card game known as Duel Monsters where characters fight against each other on a virtual battlefield by using their cards to summon fantasy monsters. This gameplay eventually materialized in real life via Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading card game. Konami eventually published video game versions of the series following the same card battle format.

Following the successful release of Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel last January, Konami released a new game that is exclusively available for mobile devices. Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel, unlike its predecessors, will offer a vast of interesting changes. For instance, Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel highlights a 4-player match system that comes with new battle rules. In this game, you have been invited to join KaibaCorp’s Cross Duel Tournament which will prompt you to enter the new Virtual Battle City.  If you have experienced playing Yu-Gi-Oh! duel, then you should know the drill.

Yu-Gi-Oh Mobile Gameplay

The mechanics of the game are generally simple and manageable. However, just like in any card battle game, you are strongly encouraged to establish an effective strategy to maximize your chances of winning. As the battle for the main campaign (Ranked Match) starts, you will be opposing three online players that are randomly selected by the system. The battle has eight rounds with alternating phases; the Main Phase and the Battle Phase. A player draws a new card from his deck during the Main phase. This is also the phase where he summons monsters in the Attack or Defense position and assigns them in any of the three lanes (each leading to a different opponent). You can also take advantage of the Main Phase and set a Trap card which will activate during the battle phase if the conditions are met.

As players enter the battle phase, all monsters that are in the Attack position will advance on their respective lanes. A battle will take place once the two monsters crossed paths. The verdict will depend on the Attack and Defense Value of a monster. If the monster you summon in Attack Position has a greater Attack value than the opposing monster, you will win the match but your monster will lose a portion of its original Attack value. It means that if your monster has 1000 ATK points and the enemy has 500, your monster will win the battle but loses 500 in return. The same thing goes when monsters are placed in a defense position. Here, the monster will not advance on the battlefield but can be attacked by any approaching monsters.

It is important to keep your defense in good shape, otherwise, the opponents can inflict direct damage to your Life Points (LP). Take note that LP will dictate the winner in every match. The player with the highest LP will win the game. Once you have inflicted direct damage to an enemy, you will gain additional LP. Therefore, the more direct damage you do, the greater your chance of winning. To make your monsters more efficient on the battlefield, you can always take advantage of the Skill cards which you can only use during the battle phase.

Yu-Gi-Oh Mobile – Establish the Ultimate Deck

Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel, like the rest of the games from its franchise, is still a deckbuilding game. While your victory will mainly depend on your strategy, building a decent deck will still declare your fate. A standard deck is composed of 20 cards, a mixture of monsters, spells, and traps.  Initially, the game provides you a starting deck after you complete the lengthy tutorial which includes an Ace monster of your choice. An Ace Monster card is the strongest monster on your deck which often requires you to sacrifice two or more monster cards on the field. In this game, there are two notable ways to improve your deck. The first is to obtain new and more powerful cards via the gacha system. You can summon cards from different banners using three different types of virtual currencies; Crystal, Gems, and Ticket Gacha. Crystals are considered premium and can be purchased via microtransaction while Gems can be obtained from matches, daily missions, and bonuses.

Each draw will provide random cards of different types and rarities. The duplicate cards you got from the gacha will be sent to your vault. Here, you have options to replace these cards with medals which you can use in the Medal shop, a place where you can buy skill and upgrade materials. Another effective way to improve your deck is to customize or upgrade individual monsters. Each monster comes with different skill trees. You need to collect specific Growth materials to unlock and obtain new skills. You can also use the duplicate copies of your monster and exchange them for a new skill slot. These skills can be activated during the battle and give you a greater chance to win the match.

Multiple Campaigns to Explore

Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel comes with five campaigns for players to explore.

Ranked Matches – The Ranked Match campaign is a PvP mode where four players will compete against each other in an 8-round battle. Here, opponents will be generated randomly by the system. It includes a Casual Match that allows you to enter a duel without affecting your current rank and a Ranked Match that requires Tickets to enter. The player with the highest LP after the eight turns will win the match.

Raid Duels – In this mode, you team up with three other players to raid a boss. The team will win the match by successfully reducing the ATK of the raid boss in the field to 0. The boss will be placed in the center of the battlefield but you can still summon monsters on the left and right lanes to heal your team’s LP. It also features a Boss Phase where the Raid boss performs Boss attacks.

Room Matches – Room Matches allow you to either create your own room or join an existing one. When creating a room, you can set rules according to your own preferences. You can also join rooms that will meet your preferred conditions. When creating a room, the game will provide you with a Room ID that you can share with your friends.

Tag Duels – In this mode, you will team up with a Tag partner and face other characters from the Yu-Gi-Oh! series. Each team of two duelists will have a shared LP. Teamwork is very crucial in this campaign to maximize your chances of winning. To top it all off, this mode will highlight some of your favorite duel masters from the animated series including Yugi, Kaiba, Mai Valentine, Bakura, and Maximillion Pegasus to name a few.

Event Matches – As the title suggests, this mode will feature special and limited-time events. This might also give you the opportunity to win special items.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Cross Duel managed to remain faithful to its roots while incorporating new exciting elements that give players an entirely new experience.
