PlayStation Mobile It’s Coming
It seems like PlayStation is expanding its platform. It was recently announced that Sony PlayStation is establishing a new division that will focus solely on mobile gaming. We can all agree that almost everyone is now engaged with their mobile devices. It is relatively inexpensive and more accessible than console devices which makes it an excellent platform to reach a wider audience. It is not really surprising to see bigger companies venture into the mobile platform in an attempt to grow their community. SEGA, for instance, managed to successfully port their classic titles into Android and iOS play stores to reintroduce their iconic games to a new generation of gamers.
Netflix also made a recent attempt to enter mobile gaming by establishing a new gaming division and producing games that are exclusively available for Netflix subscribers. PlayStation is also heading on the same path. Although Sony PlayStation is already a well-established gaming company that recently released commercially successful game titles like Horizon: Forbidden West, MLB The Show 22’, and Gran Turismo 7 to name a few, the reason behind the mobile platform expansion is to provide gamers with more ways to engage with their content.
Acquisition of Savage Game Studios
In connection with this, Sony also announced that they have acquired Savage Game Studios who will be taking charge of this newly-founded mobile gaming division.
“Established in 2020 and led by myself (Michail Katkoff -CEO of Savage Game Studios) and fellow Co-founders Nadjim Adjir and Michael McManus, Savage Game Studios was born of our many years of mobile game development experience spanning a number of massively successful global IP. Our guiding vision was a creative space where experimentation and taking risks weren’t warily avoided, but rather eagerly embraced. We’ve all worked at big studios and while we respect the advantages of ample resources, we wanted to stay small and nimble so we could call our own shots. “
It is interesting to note that this two-year-old game studio has not published any games yet but the founders already have years of experience working at numerous game developers like Zynga (Farmville, Zynga Poker, and Words with Friends), Rovio (Angry Birds), and Insomniac Games (Marvel’s Spider-man and Rachet & Clank).
“We made this deal because we believe that PlayStation Studios’ leadership respects our vision for how we can best operate and succeed, and because they too are not afraid to take chances. All of that, plus the ability to potentially tap into PlayStation’s amazing catalog of IP and the fact that we will benefit from the kind of support that only they can provide” – Michail Katkoff
No further details yet were revealed about the lineup of games that they are preparing to release exclusively for mobile. These are most likely not just ported games from their impressive roster of video game titles. Savage Game Studios will be part of the PlayStation Mobile Game Division and will operate independently from PlayStation’s console development and will focus on innovative, on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IP.
Impressive Roster of Games from Console to Mobile
This move is a great opportunity for PlayStation to finally enter the mobile gaming competition and attract a wider audience. However, this could also be a win-win situation for mobile gamers to finally have access to some of PlayStation’s iconic game titles. This is a great opportunity to see titles from highly successful video game franchises like Horizon, God of War, Elder Ring, Dying Light, Uncharted, Gran Turismo, and Need for Speed to name a few to venture from console to mobile platform. We may not be able to get the same quality but these games can be wonderfully optimized for mobile devices to provide the same level of experience. After all, many incredible mobile games today managed to deliver console-grade quality so there are definitely many great things to expect.
PlayStation also teased that Savage Game Studios is already working with a new unannounced AAA mobile live service action game but it is too early to reveal more details about it. It seems like PlayStation will be utilizing the mobile’s online feature which is something to look forward to.
