As the world awaits news on the latest Witcher game, app gamers can at least rejoice at the arrival of the first single-player expansion for GWENT: The Witcher Card Game. An expansion that is distinctly Geralt free, turning the page on The Witcher franchise.

GWENT: Rogue Mage is, in fact, a prequel that takes us back a century before the Geralt saga. Needless to say, before Geralt things were slightly more chaotic, with the Conjunction of the Spheres spitting out monsters galore onto the continent.

Rogue Mage follows the titular mage, Alzur, and his companion, Lily, as they attempt to create a living weapon to stave off the monstrous threat. A weapon that may or may not turn out to have white hair and cat eyes.

The new GWENT expansion Rogue Mage will see the mobile card game incorporate roguelike, deckbuilding and strategy game mechanics as players embark on their quest through the procedurally generated map. Alzur will fight his way towards legendary monsters, harvesting precious mutagens to fuel experiments that will help in his fight.

Powerful spells must be deployed to overcome the myriad challenges along the way, alongside combat resources represented by hundreds of new cards. These can then be upgraded and chained into combos, with ample opportunity for players to rake in legendary treasures and achievements whilst climbing the online leaderboards. Players will also be able to customize the game’s difficulty with dozens of modifiers.

The new GWENT expansion is focused on single-player gameplay, distinguishing itself from the core game by omitting the need for an internet connection or GWENT’s multiplayer client. It is the first expansion of its kind, and an attempt by CD Projekt Red to appeal to a wider audience for its legendary Witcher-born card game.

Rogue Mage is available to download now via Steam, the App Store, and Google Play, with cross-save capabilities. A deluxe version can also be downloaded which will feature the official Rogue Mage soundtrack, three alternative looks for Alzur and digital perks to deploy in the base game.
