Lord of the Rings is back

It would appear that Lord of the Rings is back in vogue (if it ever left), probably thanks to the upcoming Amazon series that has everybody talking. It is fair to say, however, that LOTR video games are tried-and-tested money-spinners that have been tempting game studios from across all genres for decades. And now EA’s share of that pie has just gotten a little bigger with the latest LOTR app game.

It’s probably no wonder that EA is jumping back into LOTR app game territory given their recent departure from the biggest cash cow of them all: the FIFA video game series. And EA is no stranger to game-ifying the legendary IP that is Lord of the Rings, either. Gamers will  no doubt fondly remember their first outings with The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers and The Return of the King on consoles.

But their latest foray into the app gaming sphere is entitled The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle Earth, which will be a “collectible role-playing game” and will involve turn-based combat, social-competitive elements and characters from across the works of J.R.R. Tolkein’s literary magnum opus.

Heroes of Middle Earth will divert from the norm by focusing on the LOTR books rather than the movies, which EA’s previous LOTR works drew from. Meaning that we can expect fresh takes on the characters we know and love. Not to mention the vast number of characters that heathens who only saw the movies will probably not recognise. Will we receive a triple S tier Tom Bombadil hero, perhaps?

The mechanics will likely emulate that of the hugely successful Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes app game, as EA are working with the same developer: Capital Games. Which can only mean good things for prospective players.

Middle-earth Enterprises executive, Frederica Drotos, had this to say: “We are thrilled to be working with EA once again, this time to bring a mobile game solely inspired by Middle-earth as described in the literary works of JRR Tolkien to its fans. It’s an honor to work with the talented Capital Games team whose knowledge and love of the lore is palpable throughout.”

We’ll be watching keenly for developments on the game’s release, so keep an eye on our news page for more.
